rd+c entered the "Apps for Metro Chicago" contest Grand Challenge Round, submitting two new Chicago data viewer apps that follow in our tradition of building technology solution that address current events. 

Chicago Crime Viewer shows a ten (10) year crime trend at the neighborhood level (288 neighborhoods) both as a shaded thematic map and popup line-graph. Other more specialized map views show crime totals for the past year at the Census block, track, police beat, and within 500ft. of CTA stations, schools and parks.  Chicago Crime Viewer map layers were designed to work with an existing mobile application from Environmental Systems Research Institute, (ESRI) to further its reach in the community. Using a mobile device's GPS allows the user to observe their location overlaid on any of the 15 map views. In addition, using the Citizen Reports layer, the user can crowdsource observation from their current location: attach a note, picture, or video, and watch your location and media appear on the Citizen Reports map.

Chicago River Viewer is an interactive map Web application that empowers any citizen with the same information used by the most sophisticated government analyst. Chicago River Viewer shows 16 river reaches that make up the Chicago Area Waterway System. Use Chicago River Viewer to view 2005 land use within 1000ft. from each river bank, wastewater treatment infrastructure, and combined sewer outflows to gain a better understand of the issues that effect your community as it relates to the river.
